United Faculty is a not for profit organization founded under and compliant with the laws of the state of California. UF became the sole bargaining agent for GCCCD faculty in May 1984. The concept of an Independent union was adopted after attempts to make membership in first CTA and then AFT work. For all the reasons mentioned above, in the "What It Means to be Independent" section, formation of UF and its goals has proven to be an idea that has worked. Membership in UF is determined by an individual unit member. By turning in a request to UF offices (i.e. choosing to "opt-in" and to begin paying full dues) they become a member of UF. (They become a unit member when hired.) A faculty member who chooses not to join UF is still represented by UF and receives all the benefits of UF activities. They remain a unit member (represented by UF) and as such are required to pay their "fair share" dues. Once choosing to become a UF member (and after a 30 day waiting period) all UF members may vote and may hold all elected or appointed Officer or Steering Committee positions. The Steering Committee is made up of twenty five faculty members drawn from both campuses. Major Divisions provide one representative. Other representatives are elected as "At Large" representatives. The term of office for a committee member is two years with 50% of committee members standing for reelection each year. UF Officers are either elected by UF members or appointed by the President. A President and two Vice Presidents are elected. The Treasurer is an appointed position. UF offices are located in Grossmont College rooms 590E and 590F. A full-time Office Manager is located in 590E. Office hours are from 9:30AM-4:00PM Monday through Thursday, and 9:30AM-1:30PM on Friday. We can be reached by phone at X-7554 utilizing the district phone system or (619)698-2698. |
